As Southeast Asia’s largest digital economy, Indonesia is well positioned to attract global and regional AI infrastructures investment. Currently, the operational data center capacity in Indonesia stands at a relatively low capacity of approximately 580 MW. However, the pipeline of data center is strong. According to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, global investors have expressed their strong interest in constructing data centers in Indonesia with a combined capacity of 1.3 GW, and total investment will reach between US $ 15-20 billion: Digital Edge is going to pour into US$4.5 Billion to build Indonesia’s Largest 500MW AI-Ready Hyperscale campus, PDG raised 𝗨𝗦𝗗 𝟴𝟱𝟲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮, and Damac-backed Edgnex is to invest $2.3bn for data center in Indonesia, China-based RangeIDC is set to invest US$ 5 billion in an artificial intelligence (AI) data center project in Batam, just name a few.
However, to power the pipeline to life at speed, securing reliable power access has become the largest challenge for data center developers and hyperscalers. Recently, Microsoft secured 200 MW renewable energy to power Indonesian data centers, and BDx has secured 1.2GW of power capacity across Indonesia, and RangeIDC has secured power through a Power Purchase Agreement between PT PLN Batam to supply electricity to power its USD 5 billion - investment data center.
